National Loving Day: National Loving Day, celebrated annually on June 12th, commemorates the historic Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws prohibiting interracial marriage in the United States. The case was brought by Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who were arrested and jailed in Virginia in 1958 for violating the state’s anti-miscegenation laws. The couple fought for their right to be married and to live together as a family, and their case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in their favour in 1967.
National Loving Day celebrates their legacy and reminds us of the power of love to overcome hate and discrimination. The holiday is not just about commemorating interracial relationships, but about spreading love and acceptance to everyone, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.
